Watch out Camry! If you showed me this new 2013 Fusion a few years back I would’ve thought it impossible for Ford to produce such a lovely piece. It’s simply gorgeous. Ford has nailed the design. Sure, there may be a nod here and there to others: the Brits with that very Aston Martin-like grill (it runs across all the new models including the Focus, and the compact C-Max Energi); the Germans with that Audi-inspired taillight assembly; and the Japanese with the narrow, Acura-like headlights. But I can’t recall a mid-size sedan in this price range impressing as much as this new Ford Fusion.
Bill Ford, Chairman of the Ford Motor Co., opened the press preview here in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show with a thunderous, 360-degree multimedia display. After a brief look into the design philosophy for the new Fusion, four models made their way into the Joe Louis Arena to an overwhelmingly positive reaction from the some 5,000 assembled auto media.
Flexibility is a key theme when it comes to engine choice. There are 5 variants available. The hybrid (47 mpg+ and about 8-10% better than the Camry Hybrid, but still less than the Prius) and the plug-in (500 mile range) were the most interesting to this observer. Having just bought a Toyota Prius (from Porsche to Prius), I would’ve given these models strong consideration had they been available back in December.
The tech set should appreciate the new MyFord Touch. Although I haven’t had hands on time yet, judging by the screen shots and video demos, it looks like it will satisfy all of us looking for extensive connectivity in our vehicle cabins.
Look for the new Fusion in dealers this fall.
My initial verdict, based on design: A. Ford is on the mark. I’m smitten by this new design direction. It’s anything but boring without resorting to the Pontiac Aztec playbook for drawing attention.
