One of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever tackled was to build my own vegetable planter box. I scoured the internet, but couldn’t find the right design and plans that suited my needs. So I made my own. And a few years back I decided to share those plans on how to build a planter box here on Stark Insider (download them here).
My goals for a DIY vegetable planter box were straight forward:
- Compact design that would fit in a narrow side yard
- Large enough to support multiple plant types (variety is the spice!)
- Robust enough to withstand years of weathering
- Deep enough to provide plenty of room for healthy root growth
- Waist high gardening
I’m happy to report that after years of gardening with my planter box, all of those goals have been met.
We’ve enjoyed bounties galore: tomatoes, arugula (my current favorite), cucumbers, and, I even allow my husband to “rent” a small corner where he can plant his favorite hot peppers.
There’s something so rewarding about being able to quickly step out into the yard, grab a fresh tomato, and then enjoy it with some balsamic vinegar and cheese. Mid-day snacks don’t get any better.

All told, these planter box plans have been downloaded thousands of times. Just yesterday I received this wonderful email from Mark, along with a photo of his finished project:
Hi Loni,
I downloaded your plans last night, this morning at 8am I was at the timber yard… 2pm and here it is :)
I added coasters so it can be moved around the garden, whole thing cost £50, it’s 2 m x 1 m so will take a fair but of filling, I’m looking forward to trying my hand at growing some veg.
