San Francisco: ‘Drag Queens on Ice’ brings campy fun to ice rink in Union Square

"We wanted to create a theme night that captures the fun, free spirit of the City."

BY Monica Turner — 11.22.2010

On Thursday, December 2, 2010 ice skaters of all ages will glide across the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square arm-in-arm with their favorite San Francisco Bay Area drag personalities at “Drag Queens on Ice.”

“We wanted to create a theme night that captures the fun, free spirit of the City,” says Safeway Holiday Ice Rink Manager Brian Klavano. “What could be more good-spirited and ‘San Francisco’ than a legion of drag queens ice skating and laughing with moms, dads and children? It’s going to be fabulous.”

Ticket prices for children eight years old and under are $4.50 Monday through Friday until 6 p.m. and $5 from 6 p.m. Friday through the closing session on Sunday. For adults, ticket prices are $9 Monday through Friday until 6 p.m. and $9.50 from 6 p.m. Friday through the closing session on Sunday. Ice skate rentals ($4) and hockey skate rentals ($5) will be available.

A portion of ticket proceeds benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. Starting Nov. 10 tickets will be available at the ice rink ticket window in Union Square. Group rates and private parties are also available.

The theme night is open to the public and takes place from 8 – 9:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the ice rink ticket booth. Admission is $5 for children eight years old and under and $9.50 for adults. Ice skate rentals ($4) and hockey skate rentals ($5) are available.
