Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco

Bravo! Spread the word: the stage lives. The San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle (SFBATCC) held its 35th annual gala Monday evening in San Francisco.

Over 70 awards were handed out to honor those that bring the stage to life across the Bay Area. According to rumor, just like the Academy Awards, there may have even been one or two Tweets during the show, but alas, no cross-dressing or impromptu iPhone videos were spotted.

Almost 100 local actors, directors, and crew joined the SFBATCC at the Palace of Fine Arts for the ceremony that by all accounts was another smashing success.

Ultimately, the winners are the hard-working folks across the hundreds of theaters — large and small — that work tirelessly to enrich our lives, bring smiles, frowns and quizzical expressions to our faces, and enlighten our sense of what it is to live. Yes – the arts matter. If anything, it makes commuting 101 almost — almost! — bearable.

Awards were presented in the following three categories:

  • Under 99 seat theatres (Drama and Musical)
  • 100-300 seat theatres (Drama and Musical)
  • Over 300 seat theatres (Drama and Musical)

For the official 2010 winners, see the list below. There are a few standouts worth noting:

  • Trouble in Mind by Aurora Theatre Company received 9 awards
  • Actress Margot Hall received 2 awards
  • A.C.T.’s The Tosca Project received 7 awards

The evening was another reminder of the vibrant, stellar theater scene here in the SF Bay Area which has historically ranked third behind only New York and Chicago as the largest and most influential theater and arts market in the U.S. However, second spot may be up for grabs as the Bay Area continues to astonish with its array of talent, diversity and artistry.

Congratulations to all.
