One needs light to cook!

    Loni and Clint

I noticed in earlier pictures of the Nueva Chica model that the amount of lighting in the kitchen will be of poor quality.

The light from the single fixture above the cabinet placed above the kitchen sink will cast a bad shadow on your work space on the kitchen counter below.

The two lights above the kitchen island will cast even more shadows if you are standing at the sink countertops.

I’d guess that they used the bland looking clear glass instead of higher quality colored art glass to help with the amount of available light in the kitchen.

This kitchen design definitely needs under cabinet lighting and/or additional ceiling lights around the cupola, especially for serious cooking! It would allow for nice hanging light fixtures above the island.

Are you in a Nueva Chica?

Would love to hear from those that have stayed in one if lighting has been an issue in this model.

I do like the higher quality colored art glass. I think I would compromise quite a bit to get that look :-). Hope there is under-cabinet lighting. This is one thing I have not thought of checking.

I'm AV 309 which is a Nueva Chica and the latest LBC report states 40 percent and shows first floor walls. I purchased in May of 2006 and the projected completion date at this time is July of 2009.
Getting our own art glass would probably be an easy fix if they are no longer including it in our homes.

We could ask Damian and Megan Smith to report on the lighting in their Founders Nueva Chica on their first trip. Thank you
Hi Conrad – Thanks for note. Good idea on getting Damian and Megan to weigh in.

I did have an email exchange with Jesus G. at Loreto Bay regarding the change in lighting fixture. He responded that he brought the issue up with Luis. According to Luis, AV houses will have the same fixtures as those in Founders except the “ones we saw in the two homes in AV will remain as they are”.

Since my question was with regards to AV in general and my unit specifically, I am still trying to get confirmation on what that means for our unit.

I am not on ground in Loreto so don’t have more clarity in the situation than this.

We’re going down for our first visit next week…will report back on kitchen lighting conditions while we’re down there.

      Hi Loni,
Just getting caught up on some of these older postings. Check your plans. You should have electrical mapped out. The under cabinet lighting will show on that plan. We will have under cabinet lighting in our Bohemia. I'm sure you will have it as well.
OK, after getting snowed in at home and our original flight getting cancelled, we finally made it to Loreto on Christmas day and can now report on the lighting in the kitchen of our Nueva Chica….

1) There is one under cabinet light under the one wall mounted cabinet and the microwave also has the equivalent of an under cabinet light as well so the range and the counter next to it can be illuminated.

2) The single light fitting high on the wall in the kitchen under the cupola is too weak on it's own to light the kitchen.

3) The lights over the bar are also both relatively weak but do shed enough light to see the surface of the bar, if not really enough to perform delicate surgery.

4) As the kitchen is open plan to the living room, switching on the chandelier over the dining table and the light that's part of the fan in the living area in addition to the lights in the kitchen area pretty much lights up the whole area.

Summary = not the best lighting, but it works OK. Frankly the bigger problem with the kitchen is that there is not enough cabinet space. The pantry is delivered as a bare closet without any shelving or anywhere to put anything in it except on the floor, so is pretty much useless until we can get a carpenter in to install some shelving. And, as all the other cabinets and drawers etc. are filled with kitchen equipment, pots and pans, and dinnerware etc. that means there's nowhere to put food.

Thanks Damian for the update. Glad to see there is at least some under cabinet lighting.

I have heard several Loreto Bay homeowners that have built shelves and storage units after accepting the home by contracting local carpenters or the company that provides the cabinets for the kitchen and bathroom.

Congratulations on your completed casa!
