It’s Friday and we are heading into the weekend. Here is some inspiration for the ultimate weekend DIY project. One of the most popular downloads on Stark Insider is my plans for a raised vegetable planter box which is located in our gardening section.

This note and photo from T-Bone will surely inspire you! He made some simple modifications to make it garden-perfect for his backyard.

Hey Loni!

I want to thank you so much for your vegetable planter plans. They were exactly what I was looking for. I had the rough idea in my head but your plans helped me figure out a few of the details I couldn’t quite grasp. Like placing 2x4s on the bottom in order to secure the planks for the bottom of the planter. It turned out so great I made 3 of them!

I recently moved into a new house in Brooklyn with a very small backyard space. Living in New York, any bit of outdoor space that I can call my own is very precious! After numerous small apartments with barely a window to grow some very leggy coleus, I was excited to start my urban garden.

The backyard was covered in tile so until we figure out how to make it more lush, I have to rely on container gardening. I adapted your plans a bit to create a smaller 3’x3′ planter, made out of cedar, and added heavy duty casters to the bottom so I can move them around as needed. I lined the inside with burlap to contain the dirt. I filled one with tomatoes, another with peppers and the third with a bit of everything else (broccoli, cucumbers, squash, brussels sprouts, etc.). I went a little overboard with growing seeds so I have a ton of plants still in various containers. I just might have to build a few more planters!

Thanks again for your help, the planters were super easy to build and really satisfying. I’m looking forward to having a bounty of veggies this summer. I’ve attached a few pictures below.

Personally, I love the arrangement with the plants in terracotta pots around. Has a beautiful “sculpturesque” look to the arrangement. I also think adding the wheels is a great idea. Thank for the note T-Bone!
