Today the California Film Institute revealed that comedian and actress Sarah Silverman is scheduled to receive a special “Spotlight” award at the 2015 edition of the Mill Valley Film Festival.

A talented, edgy and at times controversial performer, Silverman is known for her work in film (Heartbreakers, School of Rock) and television (Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons), in addition to stand-up appearances and several comedy specials (We are Miracles, for which she was awarded an Emmy).

The evening will feature a screening of her latest film I Smile Back and will be followed by a live on-stage conversation and presentation of the MVFF Award.

In I Smile Back, Sarah Silverman reinvents herself as a dramatic actress in the career-defining, intensely layered, and heartbreaking role of Laney. Directed by Adam Salky (Dare, 2009 Sundance Film Festival), I Smile Back is a “humanizing portrait that offers no easy resolution for a damaged woman struggling to come to terms with herself.”

MVFF 38 takes place October 8-18, 2015, in venues located just north of San Francisco in Marin.
